Summary

Family investment office, located in downtown NYC, financial district, is seeking an Assistant Controller. The Assistant Controller will report to the Controller, and assist with all financial matters of the company.

Job Description:
  • Responsible for all accounting and reporting for multiple entities using Quickbooks
  • Corporate accounts payable, and timely processing of debt service, rent, and other payables
  • Timely preparation of monthly financial reports, i.e. balance sheets, P&L statements
  • Prepare workpapers for outside accounting firm on annual audit and tax return prep
  • Review tax returns and financial statements prior to issuance
  • State tax estimates, and other compliance filings to keep entities in good standing
  • Preparation of source/uses and capital schedules, and related journal entries for posting
  • Insurance coverage monitoring
  • Tracking investor funding and capital accounts, capital calls
  • Lender compliance, including pre-close checklists, ongoing loan covenants and reporting
  • Reviewing draft closing statements including prorations and handle post closing true-ups
  • Determining distributions to investors using waterfalls for promotes or other overrides
  • Cash flow and taxable income reporting/forecasts
  • Calculation of tax basis for estimate of gain on sale
  • Analysis of investment cash flow and performance
  • Review of deal modeling for correctness
  • Create structure charts and operating agreements

Requirements / Qualifications:
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Proactive, highly organized, detail oriented
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding of real estate investments, REITs and multi-layer investment structures
  • 3+ years audit and tax experience at public accounting firm
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in private industry
  • Software: Quickbooks (including classes); Excel (including Vlookups and Pivottables); Word, Powerpoint required. Yardi Voyager experience a plus.

Ideal candidate will:

  • Give confidence in their ability to accurately complete tasks with minimal supervision
  • Keep files organized and up to date, including all trackers (entities, filings, distributions, etc)
  • Be very sharp, quick learner and articulate clearly both orally and in writing
  • Respect confidentiality of family financial info to be able to work on all accounts/matters
  • Be able to communicate to investors and stakeholders in a professional manner
  • Be prepared to handle basic bookkeeping tasks as well as more advanced accounting tasks
  • Have 3+ yr public accounting experience in both financial statement and tax return preparation, specifically in financials for real estate investments and preparation of partnership tax returns
  • Have 3+ yr private accounting experience in a small to midsize investment office with strong real estate experience
  • Bonus – experience with modeling and waterfalls, experience with Yardi
